In By Unknown / 11:12 PM
South Sea cultured pearls are pearl concretions that are secreted inside the silver- or gold-lipped Pinctada maxima species of pearl oysters cultivated mainly in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma).

There is no standard South Sea pearl grading standard and each individual company has its own standards. The South Sea Pearl Consortium, the trade association of South Sea Pearl farmers and distributors, uses five grading standards. South Sea Legend by Pearl Oasis uses those five standards, plus a sixth, nacre thickness. The following is the standard that we uses. If you look at the details of an South Sea pearl item in our catalog, you will find a detailed listing showing how the item rates for each of the six grading standards. Most other on-line pearl jewelry websites give no quality information about their products.

6 Grading Factors

There are six grading factors we use to grade South Sea pearls:

1. Shape: Round, Semi-Round, Semi-Baroque, Ringed or Circle, Baroque.

South Sea pearls are grown in the warm, pure waters off of Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Thailand in the oyster species Pinctada maxima (the two varieties are known as the Silver Lipped and Gold Lipped Oysters). These pearls (and their shells) are the largest and rarest grown. It takes 20 to 24 months to grow the pearl and there are many complications that can cause them to die. South Sea pearl size ranges from 9 – 20 millimeters (average size 13mm) and their colors include silver, silver/pink, white, white/pink, white/gold and gold.

SouthSea pearls can be quickly identified because of their large size. Generally, they range from 9mm to 17mm in diameter. Only in very rare cases do they grow larger.

SouthSea pearls are generally worn in a completely natural state as they come out of the oyster; they need no artificial enhancement or coloring whatsoever. That is why they are treasured as “The Queen of Pearls and the Pearl of Queens.”

SouthSea pearls come in a very wide variety of colors. The white group from Pinctada maxima shells produces pearls from silver-white to dark gold, including pink, cream, champagne, yellow, green and blue.

SouthSea pearls command high prices throughout the world. With their relative scarcity, large sizes, extended cultivation period, thicker nacreous coating and natural colors.

The color of and Akoya pearl - pearl jewelry design

In By Unknown / 7:19 PM
The color of and Akoya pearl is determined by the nacre. Environmental factors as well as the specific oyster also play a hand in the pearl's color.

After harvest, the pearl may undergo treatments to enhance or alter color. While white pearls are still by far the most popular, darker pearls with a metallic - satiny sheen have recently commanded a demand in the fine jewelry market.

By far the most popular, white Akoya have been the standard pearls that belong in every woman's jewelry wardrobe.

White Akoya Pearls
White Akoya pearls, as a color category, encompass light creamy pearls as well as those with an overtone. The overtone of a pearl is the color a pearl reflects that lies just above the pearl body color it self. In the white color family, overtones range from pink to a creamy, ivory, or silver.

Pearl color and overtone can vary slightly under different lighting sources and ambient colors, as a result of the pearl's makeup. For example, Florescent light, an overcast sky and shaded light tends to intensify blues. Regular incandescent light bulbs as well as a rising or setting sun tend to intensify reds and yellows. For the truest color, choose natural sunlight about midday.

Most importantly, the pearls themselves will best reflect and radiate the ambient light from the wearer. Her skin tones, her coloring and clothing will subtly effect the color of the pearls' shine.

Black Akoya Pearls
With the popularity of black Tahitian pearls, dyed Akoya with a metallic shine has gained prominence in the fine jewelry market. Dyed Akoya is by no means fake and have been available in fine jeweler establishments since the 1930's.

Today, dyed Akoya have become more in demand. Treatment allows consumers access to colors that are not naturally available and at smaller sizes than traditional Tahitian pearl. Most dyed black pearls are under 8mm to 9mm where as black Tahitian pearls are not as readily available in that size.

These pearls will exhibit more of a metallic shine than traditional white ones. Their darker colors are brought on by irradiation or a silver salt treatment. The treatment permanently changes the nacre of the pearls.

The metallic iridescence resulting from these treatments is very beautiful. The most popular are black with green-peacock, deep sapphire blue and dark onyx black. Blue pearls have also become popular ranging in shades of dark blue to light aqua.

A well treated pearl will display even coloring and a metallic shine.
